在《摩登家庭》台詞 'work this out at home' 中，work something out 的意思是「解決某件事情」或「想辦法解決矛盾/問題」，例如：Let's work this out.（我們把這件事解決掉）。

地道美語習語 'sweep it under the rug' 是什麼意思？

They just swept the whole scandal under the rug.（他們把整個醜聞都蓋過去了）。

如何區分 I feel that... 與 I'm getting the sense that...？

I'm getting the sense that...

make something a bigger deal than it is 是什麼意思？

If we cancel, it'll just make this a bigger deal than it is.（如果我們取消，反而會把這件事搞得比實際嚴重得多）。

🏫

note

Don't forget to bring a note from your parents tomorrow.

aftershave

须后水 — Claire 吐槽小学生 Manny 居然用须后水，没胡子可刮却已经是"小大人"人设；注意香氛类用动词 wear：My dad always wears the same aftershave.

count

Manny dresses like a count，夸张形容他穿得过分正式复古：He showed up in a velvet jacket, looking like a count.

sweeper

清扫工；（此处）回避问题的人 — Jay 劝她 sweep it under the rug，Gloria 当场造词回呛 I'm not a sweeper，-er I'm not a quitter, and I'm not a sweeper either.

💬

a little different

Your new haircut is… a little different.

I wouldn't worry

我要是你就不会担心 — 省略了 if I were you 的软性建议，校长用来安抚家长，比 Don't worry 更温和：I wouldn't eat that if I were you — it's been in the fridge for a week.

trust me on this

Trust me on this one, the tiramisu here is worth it.

Whose side are you on?

You agreed with her again? Whose side are you on?

🧩

I'm getting the sense that…

I'm getting the sense that nobody read the instructions.

work / talk it out

把问题解决掉／把话说开 — 校长让家长回家 work this out，Phil 劝两个女人 talk it out，out 都有"彻底"之意；代词宾语放中间：Let's sit down and talk it out before it gets worse.

sweep sth under the rug

掩盖问题，假装没发生 — Jay 的处世哲学，和 Phil 的 talk it out 正好相反；英式多说 under the carpet：You can't just sweep your problems under the rug forever.

make sth a bigger deal than it is

It was one bad grade — don't make it a bigger deal than it is.
