physio

= physiotherapy 的口语简称，物理治疗 — Rupert 问 "how's the physio and stuff?"，英式口语里"缩短到 -o 结尾"很常见，如 photo、demo：He goes to physio twice a week for his knee.

improvement

There's been a big improvement in her condition.

fearsome

Total monster!"，fear + -some（"引起……感觉的"后缀）：The dragon in the story is truly fearsome.

come across

偶遇，偶然碰见 — "You ever come across him at all?"，强调"无意中遇到"，不同于特意去见：I came across an old photo while cleaning out my closet.

💬

and stuff

等等，诸如此类（= and stuff like that） — Rupert 问 "how's the physio and stuff?"，比 and so on 更轻松随便：We talked about work and stuff.

for ages

好久好久（口语化的夸张时间说法） — Alicia 说 "We were just friends for ages"，比 for a long time 更随意、更带感情色彩：I haven't seen you for ages!

hardly

几乎不，几乎没有 — Rupert 说 "I feel I can hardly leave my chair"，注意和形容词 hard（努力地）区分：I hardly know him at all.

manic

忙乱的，忙到近乎疯狂的状态 — Rupert 说 "things are manic at the office, too"，口语化形容"非常非常忙"，不涉及医学诊断：Things are manic in the office at the moment.

🧩

strike a deal

达成交易或协议 — Will 说 "Can we strike a deal?"，用带点冷幽默、公事公办的口吻包装刻薄要求：The two companies struck a deal last week.

To what do I owe this pleasure?

To what do I owe this unexpected visit?

if truth be told

说实话，说真的 — Alicia 说 "if truth be told, Rupert was the most terrific support"，比 to be honest 更正式、更文学化，常用来铺垫敏感实情：If truth be told, I never really liked the plan.

Big of him

He finally apologized. Big of him.
